Shared Displays for Small Communities: Optimizing for Privacy and Relevance

INTRODUCTION Large-scale information displays are becoming increasingly common in the workplace. Because they afford group viewing and interaction, many attempts have been made to use public displays as a means of promoting awareness within communities of users. Many awareness applications built for group awareness have faced the challenge of balancing depth and relevance of information with privacy. “Semi-Public Displays,” displays scoped for small, colocated groups, take advantage of the shared context and social bonds within these groups to provide awareness information that is less likely to intrude upon users’ privacy and more likely to be of interest and relevance to viewers.
